BEES, BEERS & WHEELS WITH DR VERA SISTENICH
DR VERA SISTENICH IS ONE OUR MOST CHERISHED AND LONGEST-SERVING LOCUM DOCTORS, SO IT WAS A GIVEN WE WERE GOING TO INCLUDE HER INCREDIBLE STORY ON “BLUGIBBON BITES”
Vera has seen and experienced it all, growing up in Hong Kong, studying in England and interning in Scotland before working in South Africa then heading to Australia in 2003.
As a child spending summer holidays in Germany she remembers an elderly neighbour keeping bees.
Many years later in Coogee, Sydney, she started a hive that produced its own honey and created
Coogee Bees for Congo
.
This social enterprise helps fundraise for one of her other endeavours, the
Emergency Medicine Education
Project, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which she leads through the NGO,
HandUp Congo
.
ONE OF HER BIGGEST PASSIONS IS BEEKEEPING.
BLUGIBBON HAVE SUPPORTED HANDUP CONGO’S INITIATIVE FOR SEVERAL YEARS.
Through the charity, Vera has brought Emergency Medicine education , skills, training, and integration of EM practice into the healthcare system of the DRC and has energetically championed this ongoing. Back on the shores of Australia, Vera has worked in rural and remote areas as a locum through Blugibbon, but has also acted as a Clinical Director and educator for a number of bespoke and exclusive projects such as a telehealth program and a government contract. Her knowledge, communications skills and unflappable nature has meant professionally and personally, she is held in the highest regard by all that have the privilege of meeting and working with her. When not pursuing making the planet a better place, Vera enjoys her craft beers, so much so she has the BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) App on her phone which she refers to during tastings.
What she enjoys even more is being a devoted mother to her two young children. Cars too have been her “babies”, her first, a 1969 Mini Mayfair that she drove for four years in the UK until in true Mr. Bean-style, the head gasket exploded when pushed a little too far!
Later in life when she met her husband, Stephen discovered he was passionate about cars with near encyclopaedic knowledge, they revelled in a trip to Cuba witnessing the abundance of colourful classics. These days they are deliberately “green”, owning and driving a Tesla, as well as conserving vintage cars which they also love driving.

ο»Ώ Locum doctors and nurses across Emergency, Psychiatry, Surgery, ICU, General Practice, and Medical specialties give a lot. Long shifts in Emergency. Emotionally demanding work in mental health. High-pressure theatres and ICUs. Busy GP clinics. RMOs rotating through unfamiliar teams and hospitals. Add shift work, nights, weekends, and constant change, and it becomes clear why wellbeing matters so deeply for healthcare workers , especially those working locum or rotating contracts. At Blugibbon, we believe supporting doctors and nurses means more than filling rosters. It means creating community, balance, and continuity , particularly for those working across Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. That is why we are opening up a free monthly wellbeing session for doctors and nurses , regardless of specialty or contract type.

If you’re a doctor looking for short-term, high-paying work outside the hospital system, offshore medicine in Australia is one of the most exclusive and rewarding options available. These roles support oil and gas operations, drilling vessels, and remote energy sites, and they’re not for everyone. Offshore operators want doctors who are fully credentialed, calm under pressure, and ready to deploy. That’s why most offshore doctor jobs are never advertised publicly... and why specialist agencies like Blugibbon exist. ο»Ώ

The Expedited Specialist Pathway (ESP) in Australia has officially expanded to include General Medicine and General Paediatrics , effective 19 January 2026 . According to the latest announcement from Ahpra and the Medical Board of Australia , well-credentialed, internationally trained physicians and paediatricians from comparable health systems can now access this fast-track specialist registration pathway . This is one of the most significant updates to medical registration in Australia in recent years, particularly for UK and Irish-trained specialists, international medical graduates (IMGs) , and doctors seeking specialist jobs or locum work in Australia.

ο»Ώ For experienced GP Emergency doctors and rural locums, Norfolk Island is one of the most remote and unusual medical placements available in Australia. This is not a typical locum role. It is a high responsibility environment that requires confidence, resilience, and a realistic understanding of what isolated medicine involves. At Blugibbon, we believe doctors deserve clear, accurate information before committing to remote or offshore locum work. The aim is always to match the right doctor to the right environment. What follows is a grounded overview of GP Emergency work on Norfolk Island, based on firsthand experience during a particularly busy Christmas and New Year period.
