Expedition Medicine – Taking Adventurours Doctors To New Heights
UP THIS WEEK IS DR BRENTON SYSTERMANS, WORKING IN EMERGENCY MEDICINE AND CURRENTLY BASED IN TASMANIA.
Welcome to the next edition of “Blugibbon Bites”, a series chatting with some of our regular locum Doctors, delving beyond the clinical facade and showcasing the human behind the stethoscope.
Interestingly he met
Blugibbon for the first time while at SMACC DUB 2016 (Social Media and Critical Care Conference) while working in Ireland!
SAM AND BRENTON HIT IT OFF AND WITH BRENTON LOOKING TO RETURN TO AUSTRALIA TO PICK UP WORK AS A LOCUM DOCTOR, THE TIMING WAS PERFECT.
His locum jobs through Blugibbon have included stints in parts of the Pilbara and Great Southern Regions of Western Australia as well as regional parts of Western New South Wales and Northern Victoria.
Brenton’s most memorable medical experience to date, apart from locumming, has been working in
expedition medicine, particularly on Mount Everest in Nepal and Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

Working alongside the local Nepali Doctors, he has seen some incredible sights and interesting presentations.
NOT CONTENT WITH JUST EXPEDITION MEDICINE, BRENTON IS AN AUSTRALIAN ARMY RESERVE DOCTOR AND A LECTURER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TASMANIA IN THEIR HEALTHCARE IN REMOTE AND EXTREME ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM.
With a personal ethos of constant exploration, Blugibbon are proud as punc h to have such a long-standing relationship with a Doctor that mirrors our own sense of adventure.
Brenton is currently setting up a new service –
Mountain Medicine Australia – take a look.
