Locum Location - Tasmania
Two of our Gibbons made the journey down to Tasmania last week to meet our fantastic locum doctor in Tasmania.
Shannon and Anna absolutely loved getting in front of some of the great people we previously only had the pleasure to speak with over the phone. They also picked up some great local tricks and tips to share.
WHAT ARE THE LOGISTICS AND FLIGHT TIMES FROM MAJOR AIRPORTS?
Coming from Sydney, it was easiest to fly into Hobart and then jump in a hire car to make their way up to Launceston (apparently, it’s pronounced “LON-CESTON” – they got told off for this one!). It is a beautiful drive through the hills and only takes 2.5 hours.ANY LOCALS’ INSIDE INFO? WHAT DO YOU DO DURING YOUR TIME OFF, AS A LOCUM DOCTOR IN TASMANIA?
LAUNCESTON

On arrival in Launceston, the girls met for a coffee with Emma from LGH medical administration team. She recommended we go to
Cafe Mondello
. It is a short walk from the hospital and even has some accommodation in the back they offer to locum doctors (with free breakfast). The coffee was delicious and we even saw one of our current Blugibbon locums grabbing one on his break.
Next on the agenda was lunch with another one of our locum doctor in Tasmania. Shannon and Anna walked a whole five metres down the road to
Cafe Elaia
, what a place!

They could tell a gibbon a mile off and recommended the Barringwood Pinot Gris to accompany anything on the menu. It is a must that you say hi to the waitress Anne if you ever make it there.
HOBART

Cut to a few hours later, Shannon and Anna checked in to
The Moss at Salamanca Place in Hobart
. The girls could not recommend this hotel highly enough. Peter (the concierge) was so welcoming and the architecture, design and location were top notch.
A quick walk down through the harbour leads our gibbons to Frank , the restauran t. Where they met a few of our locum doctors in Tasmania. And Simone, who looks after all things locums at Hobart Private Hospital. The food was delicious and the company was even better. It was a great opportunity for the locum doctors to discuss the ins and outs of Hobart life , hospital operations and just have a good laugh.
You would think the girls would be stuffed full by now. But they had one more lunch on the books. You cannot walk more than a block in Hobart without passing somewhere with good seafood. So it would be silly not to try some out. They met up with one of our Blugibbon doctors who had just finished up a night shift for a
beautiful lunch at Mures Upper Deck
(right on the water and with a view back to Royal Hobart Hospital).
ANYTHING ELSE TO ADD?
It was a whirlwind of a trip but having the opportunity to see the wonderful locum doctor in Tasmania we work with everyday in person is what makes it all worth it. Every single person the girls interacted with in Tasmania, from the hire car assistant to the waitstaff, were incredibly hospitable and kind. Launceston and Hobart are both beautiful places to explore and work! The best locum doctors rarely come from job boards. They come from referrals. A colleague in the department. A registrar you worked nights with. A GP friend who keeps talking about wanting more flexibility. At Blugibbon, most of the doctors we work with were introduced to us by another doctor. And that makes sense. Medicine is a small world. Doctors trust other doctors. So when a friend says, "You should speak to these guys. They actually look after you." People listen. That is exactly why our doctor referral programme exists. Because great doctors know great doctors.

When psychiatrists talk about the best locum jobs in Australia, the conversation rarely starts with pay alone. Yes, rates matter, but so do hospital culture, clinical support, scenery, and how you feel when you finish a shift. After years of working closely with locum psychiatrists across the country, clear favourites emerge. These are destinations doctors repeatedly choose, and return to — because they offer the right balance of rewarding work and real lifestyle. Here are the top 10 locum destinations in Australia, chosen by doctors who’ve been there.
