Locum Doctor in Mackay

By a Regular Blugibbon Locum Doctor.

Locum Location:

Mackay, QLD.

Hospital Name:

Mackay Base Hospital.

How was the travel, logistics and accommodation?

Thankfully there are multiple flights to and from Mackay everyday. The airport is only five minutes out of town.

Mackay is a small city so everything is very close and accessible.

What is the team like?

The medical team are a mix of Senior Medical Officers with specialties in ACRRM and the other half are FACEMs.

They are very supportive and there is an ED consultant cover from 7am - 12pm and then on-call.

And the hospital setup? Services, facilities, other Specialist support?

It is the primary facility in the Mackay Hospital and Health Service in North Queensland and looks after an area that is larger than some whole European countries!

It has an ICU, a 24/7 Cardiac cath lab, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Special Care Nursery, and all the usual inpatient medical and surgical teams. There is also the Lifeflight Retrieval service based in Mackay with its own helicopter.

Best town amenities, shops, cafes? Share with us your favourites.

I highly recommend you check out 9th Lane Grind, Woodman's Axe and Grazing Goat.

Any local inside information we should know about? Best swimming spots, looks or trails?

You can get a boat to a Whitsunday resort island like Hamilton, Hayman or Daydream an hour or so after leaving work, or go for a run on the beach before work, or drive only 10 minutes to work with free parking, then it’s probably the place to go.

There are beaches where you can watch the sunrise while Kangaroos bounce around in front of you, endless camping options where you can pitch a tent under the Milky Way and swimming holes nestled in the rainforest to cool off on hot days sans crocodiles.

Would you go back? If so, why? Would you recommend the location?

100% I would, it has been one of my best experiences yet as a locum doctor.

Life as a Doctor Aboard the DLV2000 – by Dr. Mark When most people picture a locum medical job, they think dusty country hospitals or tropical island clinics. But for Dr. Mark, locuming has meant something entirely different this time... working 600km north of Broome on a giant floating construction site in the Timor Sea. Enter the DLV2000: part ship, part building site, part offshore medical outpost. It's a beast of a vessel, 182 metres long, 39 metres wide, with its own helideck, heavy-lift cranes, industrial workers in hi-vis, and one solo doctor on board for 28 days at a time. That doctor just happens to be Mark. From emergency med training to inspecting the ship’s galley with the captain (yes, really), Mark gives us a candid look into what life’s really like offshore. The routine, the downtime, the food (spoiler: it’s very good), and the kind of clinical presentations you’ll see when you’re hundreds of kilometres from land with nothing but ocean around you. Curious what it takes to be a ship’s doctor? Wondering if it’s worth the pay and adventure? Or just want to see what “remote medicine” truly means? Mark’s got you covered. Let’s dive in...
