Locum Location - Tamworth, NSW

A Blugibbon Doctor’s Experience Locuming in Tamworth, NSW

Settling into Tamworth was easy. One of the FACEMs took the time to show me around on arrival, which made a big difference on the first shift. The general approach here is to just get stuck in; the department is busy, but the senior doctors are approachable, and there’s always someone you can ask if you need a second opinion or support.

Travel and logistics were straightforward. I had good layover times between connecting flights, and getting around town was simple using the Tamworth Cabs app, which I used to pre-book transport. Accommodation was basic but clean and comfortable, everything you need for a locum stay without any fuss.

ο»ΏSupport in the Emergency Department was solid. Senior staff were easy to approach and genuinely willing to help, which made working in a busy department feel manageable, even during peak periods. Most specialties were available on-call, and access to imaging was excellent, so patient flow and decision-making felt well supported.

I was rostered in minors during the evening shifts, and it was consistently busy. I saw more than 10 patients per shift, and while the hospital overall felt stretched at times, including periods of skeleton staffing, the department ran well given the workload.

ο»ΏOutside of work, Tamworth has a relaxed, easygoing feel. Camp Ground Coffee was a standout; great coffee, good brunch options, and some fun local merch.

With limited downtime, I mostly explored the town and fitted in some home workouts, but it’s clearly a place where you could settle in comfortably for a longer stint.

I didn’t get a chance to explore swimming spots or walking trails this time, but Tamworth struck me as a quiet, peaceful and friendly regional centre.

I would absolutely go back. The town is welcoming, the department has good senior support, and overall, it’s a positive place to work as a locum. For doctors looking for a well-supported regional ED role with a friendly team and a calm lifestyle outside of shifts, Tamworth is an easy recommendation.

ο»Ώ Locum doctors and nurses across Emergency, Psychiatry, Surgery, ICU, General Practice, and Medical specialties give a lot. Long shifts in Emergency. Emotionally demanding work in mental health. High-pressure theatres and ICUs. Busy GP clinics. RMOs rotating through unfamiliar teams and hospitals. Add shift work, nights, weekends, and constant change, and it becomes clear why wellbeing matters so deeply for healthcare workers , especially those working locum or rotating contracts. At Blugibbon, we believe supporting doctors and nurses means more than filling rosters. It means creating community, balance, and continuity , particularly for those working across Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. That is why we are opening up a free monthly wellbeing session for doctors and nurses , regardless of specialty or contract type.
