Snow, Slopes & Shifts: Why Doctors Are Locuming in the Snowy Mountains This Winter

You don’t need to jet off to Japan or Europe to experience world-class skiing. Australia’s Snowy Mountains offer fresh powder, epic scenery... and for locum doctors, the chance to combine flexible work with a winter getaway.

At Blugibbon, we’ve placed hundreds of doctors in the Southern Highlands and ACT region. With great access to Perisher and Thredbo via Canberra, many of our locums are discovering a whole new way to work, earn, and explore.

If you’re considering a stint in emergency medicine, rural GP or general locum work this winter, here’s your insider’s guide, local tips included.

Base Yourself in Canberra, Escape to the Slopes

Canberra is fast becoming a favourite among doctors who want the best of both worlds, an easy-to-navigate capital city with high-quality hospital placements, and a straight-shot route into the mountains for your days off.

From Canberra, you’re just a 2–2.5 hour drive to the Snowy Mountains region, including:

Perisher – Australia’s largest ski resort

Thredbo – For longer runs and lively après

Crackenback – A charming mountain village that’s a great base if you want to explore both

Perisher: Pro Tips from the Locals

Perisher is a favourite for its range of runs, reliable snow, and family-friendly options—but it’s not cheap, so local know-how goes a long way.

Smart ways to save $$$ and ski:

  • Lift Passes – Book your ski lift and add the Skitube as an optional extra (not separately, it’s cheaper).
  • Getting There – Drive in early if you want a car park spot. For less hassle, drive up to the Skitube terminal, unload your gear, then park.
  • Gear Hire – Hire from Rhythm in Cooma. Friendly team, high-quality gear, and better prices than near the slopes.
  • Hydration – Bring a camelback. Water is $8 per bottle on the slopes and $20 for a schooner of Balter.

Local tip: "We got a private ski lesson for our 8-year-old, turned into a surprise highlight when the instructor gave our 4-year-old a ride on his skis. The whole family left on a snowy high."

Eating on the mountain:

  • Best bites: German sausages and beer at Sundeck Hotel (you’ll need to walk up), or a sit-down meal at The Man From Snowy River Hotel.
  • Snacks: Pack your ski jacket with food (and maybe a donut from Little Orbits at the Skitube terminal for kid bribery).
  • Coffee & Cake: Brunetti's is a reliable stop for a warm-up treat.
  • Skip the rest – Food at Perisher is overpriced and underwhelming, so plan ahead.

Thredbo: Snow Runs, Scenic Vibes and a Bit of Après

Thredbo is known for its longer runs, scenic views, and slightly more premium feel. It’s also where the locals head for weekend events and a bit of culture with their cardio.

Must-dos:

  • Park in the main car park and take the free shuttle to the village.
  • The Alpine Coaster is great fun if the queue’s not too long.
  • Family-friendly: Wander the playground, grab a coffee and soak up the atmosphere.

Where to eat and drink:

  • Coffee: Zac’s or Avalanche (try the sausage roll too).
  • Cocktails with a view: Piste Bar for an arvo nibble or drink.
  • Live music: Check the Thredbo Events page, most bars have free live après sets on Saturdays, and they’re kid-friendly too.

Jindabyne, Crackenback and Hidden Gems

Staying off the mountain can save serious money... and get you closer to the local food scene.

Where to stay:

  • Crackenback: A fantastic base that’s close to both Perisher and Thredbo. Affordable options like Parklea Cabins are perfect for doctors making the most of their off days.
  • Want snow without skiing? Head to Dead Horse Gap for snow play and tobogganing (get there early to avoid crowds).

Local eats and drinks:

Crackenback area

  • Perrotta’s Italian (at Lake Crackenback)
  • Crackenback Farm
  • Wild Brumby Distillery

Jindabyne

  • Coffee: ESS or CBD
  • Brunch: Birchwood
  • Brewery: Jindabyne Brewing Co.

Berridale

  • Coffee: Halfway Coffee Van
  • Wine tasting: Shut the Gate Wines (best without kids)

Why Doctors Choose to Locum in the Snowies

Locuming in Canberra or rural NSW this winter means:

  • High pay rates and short-term flexibility
  • Minimal travel to access world-class snowfields
  • Weekly payroll, one point of contact, and zero admin headaches
  • Time to explore—on your own or with family

If you're a UK or Irish-trained doctor looking to combine your Aussie working holiday with the best of winter, or if you're based in Australia and want to balance work with ski trips, now is the time.

Life as a Doctor Aboard the DLV2000 – by Dr. Mark When most people picture a locum medical job, they think dusty country hospitals or tropical island clinics. But for Dr. Mark, locuming has meant something entirely different this time... working 600km north of Broome on a giant floating construction site in the Timor Sea. Enter the DLV2000: part ship, part building site, part offshore medical outpost. It's a beast of a vessel, 182 metres long, 39 metres wide, with its own helideck, heavy-lift cranes, industrial workers in hi-vis, and one solo doctor on board for 28 days at a time. That doctor just happens to be Mark. From emergency med training to inspecting the ship’s galley with the captain (yes, really), Mark gives us a candid look into what life’s really like offshore. The routine, the downtime, the food (spoiler: it’s very good), and the kind of clinical presentations you’ll see when you’re hundreds of kilometres from land with nothing but ocean around you. Curious what it takes to be a ship’s doctor? Wondering if it’s worth the pay and adventure? Or just want to see what “remote medicine” truly means? Mark’s got you covered. Let’s dive in...
