AHPRA Registration Made Simple - A Step-by-Step Guide for UK & NZ Psychiatrists

By Jay Wheatley, Head of Psychiatry Recruitment

If you’re a Psychiatrist in the UK or New Zealand, moving to Australia is probably on your radar.

But let’s be honest... the paperwork alone can feel overwhelming.

I get it. I’ve recently relocated from the UK myself, and while the process can look steep at first, it’s completely manageable with the right roadmap.

This guide breaks down AHPRA registration in plain English, so you can focus on planning your move, not getting lost in red tape.

ο»ΏThe Expedited Specialist Pathway (The Game Changer)

As of late 2024, AHPRA introduced an expedited specialist pathway for selected specialties, including Psychiatry, for doctors from the UK, Ireland, and New Zealand.

How it works

  • Skip the lengthy RANZCP comparability assessment
  • Apply directly to AHPRA for specialist registration

Why it matters

  • Cuts months off the registration timeline
  • Removes one of the biggest historical bottlenecks

Who’s eligible

  • UK: CCT holders
  • Ireland: CSCST holders
  • New Zealand: Fellowship holders

For many senior psychiatrists, this has been a genuine game-changer.

The New Zealand Advantage (TTMRA)

If you’re an RANZCP Fellow currently practising in New Zealand, this is by far the simplest route.

The Pathway

  • Apply under the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act (TTMRA)

What to expect

  • Timeline: typically 4–8 weeks
  • Requirement: current, unconditional NZ registration

This pathway is widely regarded as the fastest and most straightforward way into Australian practice.

UK Pathways Explained (Specialist vs Competent Authority)

Your pathway from the UK depends on seniority and whether you’ve completed your CCT.

A. Specialist Pathway

(UK Consultants / CCT Holders)

The process

  • RANZCP assesses your UK training against Australian standards

The outcome

  • Eligible for specialist registration
  • Usually, 12 months of peer-reviewed supervised practice
  • Exams are rarely required

This route is well established and suits experienced consultants looking to transition smoothly into the Australian system.

B. Competent Authority Pathway

(Registrars & JMOs)

If you haven’t completed your CCT but have:

  • A UK medical degree or PLAB
  • Foundation training plus 12 months of supervised practice

The process

  • Apply directly to AHPRA
  • No College assessment required

The goal

  • Achieve General Registration after 12 months of practice in Australia

This is a popular option for psychiatrists earlier in their careers.

ο»ΏWhy Partnering With an Agency Helps

Navigating registration is doable solo... but having the right support can save time, stress, and costly delays.

An experienced agency can help with:

βœ… Document pre-checks before submission

βœ… Clear guidance tailored to your exact pathway

βœ… Support with Medicare numbers, supervisors, and onboarding

βœ… Access to established relationships with LHDs, Clinical Directors, and Recruitment Managers

Ready to Make the Move?

We’re actively recruiting for Psychiatry vacancies across Australia and regularly support UK and NZ psychiatrists through the entire relocation and AHPRA registration process.

Whether you’re:

  • An NZ psychiatrist exploring a move across the Tasman, or
  • A UK Consultant looking for a lifestyle change

Feel free to reach out, let’s have a chat, and map out your next step.

ο»Ώ For experienced GP Emergency doctors and rural locums, Norfolk Island is one of the most remote and unusual medical placements available in Australia. This is not a typical locum role. It is a high responsibility environment that requires confidence, resilience, and a realistic understanding of what isolated medicine involves. At Blugibbon, we believe doctors deserve clear, accurate information before committing to remote or offshore locum work. The aim is always to match the right doctor to the right environment.
