IMGs applying for 2027 RMO / JMO roles in Australia — This one is for you

The State Campaign Windows are starting to open, and this is the bit that catches a lot of overseas-Trained doctors out.

Your first Australian hospital role often starts with one simple thing:

  • Getting your state campaign application in on time.
  • You need to apply directly through the official state health portals.
  • Not through WhatsApp.
  • Not through a mate.
  • Not by sending one generic CV to every hospital and hoping for the best.
  • The portal matters.
  • The dates matter.
  • The wording matters.
  • Your CV matters.
  • Your cover letter matters.
  • Your referee details matter.
  • And yes — the selection criteria absolutely matter.

Important note for Victoria:

You will usually need to apply through both the PMCV match system and individual hospital careers portals.

So please do not leave Victoria until the last minute.

Now for the tips that make a difference:

Do not use one generic CV for every state.

Each state, hospital and campaign can look for slightly different things. Your CV should be clear, Australian-style, easy to scan, and targeted to RMO / JMO / HMO-level hospital work.

Put your clinical experience up front.
Make your rotations obvious.
Use Australian terminology where possible.
Include dates, hospital names, departments and your level of responsibility.
Do not bury your emergency, medicine, surgery, paeds or O&G experience halfway down page three
.

Check the level you are applying for.

RMO, JMO, HMO, SRMO, Registrar and PHO do not always mean exactly the same thing across every state.

Victoria often uses HMO.
Queensland commonly uses RMO / Registrar / PHO.
NSW uses JMO as the broader junior medical officer term.

Before applying, check the year level, eligibility criteria and position description properly.

Your cover letter should not sound like it was written for every hospital in Australia.

A good cover letter should explain:

  • Why this state
  • Why this hospital or network
  • Why this level of role
  • What experience you bring
  • What you are looking for in 2027
  • Why you are safe, reliable and suitable for the team

Keep it professional, but human.

Selection criteria are not optional.

If the advert asks you to address selection criteria, address them properly.

Do not write: “Please see CV.”

Give short, real examples.

Use examples from clinical work, communication, escalation, teamwork, audits, teaching, quality improvement, difficult patients, busy shifts, and working under supervision.

Referees matter.

Before you apply, speak to your referees.

Make sure they:
Know you are applying
Are happy to be contacted
Have the correct email and phone details listed
Can comment on your clinical safety, reliability, communication and teamwork

A strong referee can help. A surprised referee can slow everything down.

Save everything as PDFs.

CV.
Cover letter.
Selection criteria.
AHPRA documents if relevant.
AMC / EPIC / ECFMG / qualification evidence if relevant.
Passport.
Visa documents if relevant.
Medical school documents.
Internship evidence.
Employment certificates.

Have a clean folder ready before the portal asks for it.

Do not wait until the final week.

Portals crash.
Documents go missing.
Referees take time.
Selection criteria take longer than expected.
You may need to rewrite your CV.
And time zones can catch you out.

A deadline of 12pm AWST is not the same as 12pm in London, Dublin, Sydney or Auckland.

Be honest about your availability.

Hospitals want to know when you can realistically start.

If you are offshore, be clear about:
Visa status
AHPRA status
AMC progress
Notice period
Arrival timeline
Relocation plans

Do not overpromise a start date you cannot meet.

  1. Apply directly — but still get advice.

For state campaign roles, you generally need to apply directly through the official government health portal.

But that does not mean you need to prepare alone.

Your CV, cover letter, level selection, state strategy and application wording can make a big difference.

Remember: campaigns are not the only route.

The annual state campaigns are important.

But they are not the only way doctors find work in Australia.

There are also year-round hospital workforce needs, fixed-term contracts, regional opportunities and roles that open outside the main campaign windows.

So yes, apply through the official portals.

But also keep your options open.

The big reminder:

Missing a state campaign deadline can mean waiting another year.

Do not leave your CV, cover letter, selection criteria or application wording until the final week.

Get organised early.
Read the official portal instructions.
Save the links.
Check the dates.
Tailor your documents.
And ask questions before the deadline, not after it.

Save this post, share it with another IMG doctor, and start getting organised today.

Australia 2027 will come around quickly.
