Your Mentla Health Locum Specialist:

Expanding Horizons, One Placement at a Time

Jay Wheatley

I specialise in working with Psychiatrists and Mental Health doctors across all levels, subspecialties, and locations throughout Australia. With a solid background in healthcare recruitment and a genuine understanding of the challenges faced by clinicians in this space, I focus on creating meaningful connections that support both career growth and wellbeing.

My role is about finding opportunities that truly fit, whether that’s a locum psychiatry position, a fixed-term contract, or a permanent move to a service that aligns with your goals and lifestyle.

Over the years, I’ve worked with doctors from the UK, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia, helping them take the next step in their careers with confidence. What matters most to me is making the process straightforward, personal, and rewarding from the very first conversation.

At Blugibbon, we pride ourselves on being genuine, approachable, and committed to long-term relationships. If you’re exploring your next move in psychiatry or mental health, I’m here to make it simple and successful.

Why Mental Health Recruitment is My Commitment

My commitment to Psychiatry recruitment is fueled by the simple truth that mental health challenges affect most people at some point in their life, whether directly, or through a friend, family member, or colleague. Psychiatrists provide the essential, specialist care that changes these trajectories. I find profound purpose in ensuring these critical roles, which support entire communities, are filled by exceptional professionals.

The Growth and Value of a Psychiatry Career

Psychiatry and Mental Health are dynamic and rapidly growing areas, with increasing demand for specialists who can adapt to diverse patient needs and settings. Every subspecialty—whether General Adult, Child and Adolescent, Forensic, or Consultation-Liaison - brings its own rewards and pathways for professional growth.

Psychiatry sits at the crossroads of medicine and humanity - Many of the Psychiatrists I have worked with have backgrounds in Emergency or Critical Care medicine, bringing with them a deep understanding of crisis management, teamwork, and holistic patient care. The transition into Mental Health often feels like a natural evolution: applying those acute care instincts to long-term recovery and wellbeing.

Psychiatry's Value: The Real-World Impact

  • Essential Continuity: The ability to move beyond crisis intervention and establish long-term therapeutic relationships that support a patient's stability.
  • Restoring Function: Helping individuals regain their quality of life, which has a positive ripple effect on their careers, families, and community participation.
  • Specialist Expertise: Applying advanced diagnostic, pharmacological, and relational skills to manage the most complex mental health challenges.

Recent Success Story: Supporting a Seamless Transition

Recently, I worked with a doctor who had spent several years in Emergency Medicine before deciding to move into Psychiatry. Together, we mapped out a pathway that allowed them to explore locum work across regional services, gaining hands-on experience and discovering the area that best fit their interests. They’ve now secured a permanent consultant role — still helping patients in crisis, but with a renewed sense of purpose and balance.

Just before I left the UK, one of my long-term locums secured a highly competitive permanent Consultant position. I had worked with this doctor since his junior years, during which he used locum roles strategically to gain flexible exposure to a wide range of subspecialties and clinical environments early in his career. Through a series of well-chosen locum placements, he was able to build comprehensive specialist knowledge and confidently refine his long-term professional focus upon completing his training.
