An opportunity is available for a Career Medical Officer to join the Mental Health Services team at Royal Hobart Hospital in Tasmania.
This permanent full-time role is suited to doctors with experience in General Adult Psychiatry, Acute Psychiatry, Emergency Department mental health presentations, or hospital-based mental health care. The position involves working with a high level of professional independence while remaining supported by consultant psychiatrists, senior medical staff, psychiatry CNS staff, ED psychiatry colleagues and wider multidisciplinary teams.

• Salary package: AUD $128,750 – $183,340 per annum, pro rata, plus 12% superannuation and salary packaging

About the Role
As a Career Medical Officer in Psychiatry, you will provide mental health medical services across Royal Hobart Hospital, including after-hours care.
You will assess and manage patients referred to Mental Health Services from the Emergency Department, provide medical care to patients in inpatient mental health units including the Short Stay Unit, and attend to mental health patients across the hospital who require specialist medical input.
The role offers a mix of acute mental health, emergency psychiatry and inpatient care, with clinical direction and supervision provided by consultant psychiatrists and senior medical staff.
Key Responsibilities
Your responsibilities will include:
• Assessing and managing patients referred from the Emergency Department
• Providing medical care to patients in inpatient mental health units
• Supporting mental health patients across the wider hospital
• Liaising with consultant psychiatrists regarding assessment and management plans
• Maintaining accurate clinical documentation, including admissions, progress notes and discharge summaries
• Working closely with the multidisciplinary team
• Responding to clinical calls from nursing and medical staff
• Prescribing, administering and documenting medications and treatments accurately
• Participating in discharge planning and continuity of care
• Complying with professional, ethical and legal requirements, including the Tasmanian Mental Health Act
