Consultant Urological Surgeon – Tasmania, Australia
A Consultant Urological Surgeon opportunity is available in northern Tasmania, based across Launceston General Hospital and Mersey Community Hospital.
This is a fixed-term role offering the chance to join a well-established Urology service providing Level 6 care across North and North-West Tasmania, with access to modern facilities, subspecialty work, teaching, and a strong regional lifestyle.

The Role
You will join a supportive Urology team at Launceston General Hospital, working as part of a comprehensive service that supports a population of approximately 300,000 people across northern Tasmania.
The service provides a broad range of Urology care across inpatient, outpatient, theatre and day procedure settings. The department has access to contemporary equipment, including a da Vinci XI dual console robotic platform.
Clinical duties include:
• Operating in the main theatre suite at Launceston General Hospital
• Operating in the Day Procedure Unit at Launceston General Hospital and Mersey Community Hospital
• Outpatient clinics across Launceston General Hospital and Mersey Community Hospital
• Providing consultative support to other specialty units
• Participating in weekly Grand Rounds
• Supervising junior medical staff
• Supporting quality assurance and clinical governance activities
• Participating in multidisciplinary team meetings
• Contributing to SET Registrar training
• Supporting undergraduate and junior doctor teaching
• Subspecialty interests are encouraged. Experience in female urology and robotic surgery is highly valued.
The Hospital and Service
Launceston General Hospital is a major public hospital providing inpatient and ambulatory services to Launceston and the surrounding region. The Urology Unit delivers a Level 6 service across northern Tasmania and works closely with Mersey Community Hospital as part of statewide urological service provision.
You will work alongside a team of experienced urologists, registrars, including a SET trainee, and a clinical nurse specialist. The service has a collaborative structure and offers opportunities to contribute to teaching, training, research and service development.
Location
Launceston is Tasmania’s second major city, located in the Tamar Valley in northern Tasmania.
The region offers access to wineries, markets, restaurants, mountain biking, golf courses, arts events and wilderness areas including Cradle Mountain. Launceston has regular flight connections to major Australian capital cities, with Melbourne approximately 45 minutes away by air.

Appointment Details
This is a fixed-term, position with on-call requirements.
• Hours: 21 hours per fortnight
• Term: Three-year fixed-term appointment
• Start date: As soon as possible
• Employment type: Fixed-term, part-time
There may be scope for the successful applicant to work as either a Visiting Medical Specialist or Staff Specialist, with hours to be negotiated.
Salary and Benefits
Salary is in accordance with the Tasmanian Visiting Medical Practitioners Agreement.
Indicative package includes:
• Visiting Medical Practitioners Level 1 to Visiting Medical Specialists Level 4: AUD $254,149 – $445,341 per annum, pro rata
• 12% superannuation
• Access to salary packaging
• Urology Specialist Allowance of up to AUD $110,000 per annum, pro rata
• Relocation and commencement support of up to AUD $15,000 for approved appointees
Eligibility
Applicants must hold, or be eligible for, specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty.
Desirable criteria include:
• Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, or equivalent
• Relevant specialist urology training and consultant-level experience
The expedited pathway for Fellowship Accreditation is now available through RACS, which may be relevant for eligible internationally trained specialists.
