By our Locum doctor in Rockhampton: Dr Caoimhe.
The team were so welcoming and friendly at Rockhampton Base Hospital. A busy ED which services a large geographic area. Some of the wardsmen are also trained plaster technicians which is very handy to know!
Some specialties on site include ICU, Orthopaedics, Medicine and Surgery. Sub-specialist referrals go to Brisbane and this includes things like ENT, Ophthalmology and Plastics – meaning at times it may be necessary to arrange travel for these patients.
Thankfully all my IT setup was organised on the first day along with EDIS training (Emergency Department Information System).
The majority of accommodation is based onsite at the hospital. It is clean and just a two minute walk to work.
Flight time for me was approximately one hour from Brisbane, and from Rockhampton Airport to my accommodation was just five minutes in a taxi.
Yeppoon is a great coastal town 45 minutes from Rockhampton, from there you can take a trip to Keppel Islands, a place I definitely want to visit for snorkelling and island vibes.
Woolworths is a 20-30 minute walk and a five minute taxi from the accommodation. There are a few brunch spots in town, including Coffee Society and Two Professors.
Yes I would go back, it is a well supported emergency department, there is a good variety of work and it is an easy commute from Brisbane.
We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the traditional custodians of our land – Australia. The Gadigal of the Eora Nation are the traditional custodians of this place we now call Sydney.
