Mount Gambier and Districts Health Service (aka Mount Gambier Hospital), SA. It’s a small team of very capable and welcoming nurses, doctors and support staff, they made a locum doctor feel at home.
Requesting investigations and referring for admissions is a breeze.
There is General Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Paediatrics.
Telemedicine is used for Mental Health and Cardiology and the Retrieval Service is just a phone call away.
ED (Emergency Department Doctors) cover MET calls (Medical Emergency Teams) and “Code Blacks” on the Wards.
I settled in great, but definitely bring an extra jumper and raincoat, just in case it is a little chilly and wet!
Hot tip, the cafe at the hospital opens at 10am Saturday and Sunday, so prepare to be pre caffeinated if you are doing a day shift.
It is either a five hour drive or a simple one hour flight from Adelaide.
The accommodation was a self-selected pet-friendly place but the hospital supplied accommodation that is close to the hospital and comfortable (you would still need use of a car).
I highly suggest a walk around the beautiful Blue Lake.
You must book into the Barn Steakhouse for a good feed.
Definitely. The department is a delight to work for and it is a stunning part of South Australia.
