Locum Location - Gippsland, VIC

Locum Location Review: Sale Hospital, Central Gippsland, VIC.

Thinking about your next locum adventure in Victoria? Here’s what Blugibbon's Dr Dan had to say about his recent experience working at a small regional hospital just a few hours’ drive from Melbourne.

Settling In

The drive was easy and the hospital was very straightforward to find with plenty of available parking.

Starting a new placement can feel daunting, but Dr Dan found the arrival simple and stress-free.

Department Support

There was an SHO and a FACEM available, both very approachable. The nurses and clerical staff were also kind and helpful. Overall, the team was extremely supportive and made it easy to settle into a new environment.

Specialists and Clinical Resources

A FACEM was on call. Access to imaging required an account with I-Med Radiology, but this was not a problem; other doctors were happy to help with access when needed.

Emergency Department Workload

The busiest shift had around 12 patients waiting to be seen, mostly low- to mid-acuity cases. On average, I would see about eight patients per shift.

Hospital Setup

It’s a small hospital with a fishbowl-style design for the doctors. There are cubicles surrounding the central area and easy access to the cafeteria.

Time Off and Local Life

I spent time at the gym and enjoyed walks by the nearby lake. Lake Guthridge is beautiful — perfect for a swim, a walk or just taking in the views.

Local Food, Coffee and Shopping

Redd Catt is a great spot for good coffee and a quick bite to eat.

Would you return?

Yes, I’d absolutely go back and would recommend the location to others interested in locuming there. The team is kind and friendly, and the patient mix provides great clinical variety in a supportive environment.

Hi, it’s Jay from Blugibbon. I’ve worked in psychiatry recruitment for more than eight years, and since relocating to Australia, I’ve noticed something that keeps coming up. Emergency doctors make outstanding psychiatrists. It isn’t a one-off observation. I’ve seen it repeatedly in hospitals across the country. The core skill set of an emergency physician translates naturally into psychiatry, particularly in crisis care and acute mental health settings. If you want an inspiring example, listen to Dr Katie Treble on ABC Conversations as she shares her journey from emergency medicine to psychiatry. It’s a brilliant insight into what this transition can look like in real life. ๏ปฟ

Life as a Doctor Aboard the DLV2000 – by Dr. Mark When most people picture a locum medical job, they think dusty country hospitals or tropical island clinics. But for Dr. Mark, locuming has meant something entirely different this time... working 600km north of Broome on a giant floating construction site in the Timor Sea. Enter the DLV2000: part ship, part building site, part offshore medical outpost. It's a beast of a vessel, 182 metres long, 39 metres wide, with its own helideck, heavy-lift cranes, industrial workers in hi-vis, and one solo doctor on board for 28 days at a time. That doctor just happens to be Mark. From emergency med training to inspecting the ship’s galley with the captain (yes, really), Mark gives us a candid look into what life’s really like offshore. The routine, the downtime, the food (spoiler: it’s very good), and the kind of clinical presentations you’ll see when you’re hundreds of kilometres from land with nothing but ocean around you. Curious what it takes to be a ship’s doctor? Wondering if it’s worth the pay and adventure? Or just want to see what “remote medicine” truly means? Mark’s got you covered. Let’s dive in...
