Locum Location - Lenah Valley, TAS

Emergency Department Locum Work with a Relaxed Hobart Lifestyle

If you're considering a locum Emergency Department role at Calvary Lenah Valley Hospital, you’ll be working just minutes from central Hobart in a department with supportive colleagues, broad clinical exposure, and easy access to Tasmania’s incredible natural scenery.

The Hospital & Emergency Department

The Emergency Department at Calvary Lenah Valley Hospital has become busier in recent years, meaning shifts can be varied and sometimes unpredictable, particularly overnight.

Night shifts are typically worked solo, while daytime shifts usually have another doctor rostered alongside you. Once you become familiar with the systems and processes, many locum doctors find the department very manageable.

The hospital has a strong cohort of consultants covering the hospital, alongside Emergency Medicine specialists. Locum doctors often comment on how welcoming and helpful the colleagues and VMOs are, making it a supportive environment to work in.

The Emergency Department is currently going through a transition period, which means there is ongoing development in how the department operates.

Specialist Support & Facilities

Doctors working in the Calvary Lenah Valley ED generally have access to a range of specialties including:

  • General Surgery
  • General Medicine
  • Orthopaedics
  • Cardiology
  • Radiology
  • Maxillofacial Surgery

Obstetrics & Gynaecology are usually available, although sometimes it requires coordinating to find the right specialist. Plastics may occasionally be on call as well.

Currently, there is no dedicated ENT, Paediatrics, or Mental Health specialist coverage, so the role suits Emergency doctors comfortable managing a broad range of presentations.

Travel, Logistics & Accommodation

Lenah Valley is located around 10 minutes from Hobart CBD, making travel and logistics straightforward for locum doctors.

If you're relocating for a longer placement, many doctors recommend checking realestate.com.au early as rental accommodation can sometimes take time to secure. Having temporary accommodation arranged initially can make the transition much smoother.

Life in Lenah Valley & Hobart

Lenah Valley sits at the base of Mount Wellington (Kunanyi) and offers easy access to both the city and Tasmania’s spectacular natural landscapes.

Hobart is often compared to places like Inverness or the Scottish Highlands, a smaller city surrounded by mountains, coastline and incredible scenery. Everything is centrally located, so even during shorter locum placements, you can explore plenty.

On your time off you might enjoy:

  • Hiking or driving up Mount Wellington
  • Scenic coastal walks and lookouts
  • Hobart’s vibrant food scene and markets
  • Day trips into Tasmania’s national parks and wilderness

Local Favourites

Hobart has a fantastic café culture. Some local favourites include:

  • Pilgrim Coffee
  • Six Russell’s

Perfect spots for a post-shift coffee or relaxed brunch.

The best locum doctors rarely come from job boards. They come from referrals. A colleague in the department. A registrar you worked nights with. A GP friend who keeps talking about wanting more flexibility. At Blugibbon, most of the doctors we work with were introduced to us by another doctor. And that makes sense. Medicine is a small world. Doctors trust other doctors. So when a friend says, "You should speak to these guys. They actually look after you." People listen. That is exactly why our doctor referral programme exists. Because great doctors know great doctors.

If you have ever walked through a medical conference exhibition hall, you know the drill. Rows of booths. Branded pens. Plastic stress balls. A recruiter asking “Are you looking for work?” before they have even learned your name. That is not us. If you are attending the RANZCP Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) in Melbourne in May 2026 , there is one thing you should know. Blugibbon is the official provider of caffeine . ā˜• And that is completely intentional.
