Become a Specialist Anaesthetist in Australia: Your Guide to the ANZCA SIMG Pathway

Dreaming of practicing your skills as a specialist anaesthetist in Australia?

The Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) offers a pathway for international medical graduates (IMGs) to gain recognition of their qualifications and pursue their careers Down Under.

This comprehensive guide will walk you through the ANZCA Specialist International Medical Graduate (SIMG) pathway, providing essential information and actionable steps to help you achieve your goal.

What is the ANZCA SIMG Pathway?

The SIMG pathway is designed to assess the comparability of your qualifications and experience to those of an Australian or New Zealand-trained specialist anaesthetist. It's not a training program but an assessment process that evaluates your readiness to practice independently in Australia or New Zealand.

Who is Eligible?

To be eligible for the SIMG pathway, you must:

  • Hold a primary medical qualification recognised by the Australian Medical Council (AMC) and the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS).
  • Have completed all training and examination requirements to practice as a specialist anaesthetist in your country of training.

Steps in the SIMG Pathway

  1. Primary Source Verification: Begin by having your primary and specialist qualifications verified by the Educational Committee for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) through the AMC's Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials (EPIC) portal.

  2. Application to ANZCA: Submit a complete application package to ANZCA, including:

  • Completed application form
  • Curriculum vitae in the ANZCA format
  • Evidence of CPD participation for the last three years
  • Completed SIMG application fee form
  • Evidence of English language proficiency
  • Certificate(s) of registration status (CORS)
  • Copy of your passport
  • Statutory declaration or evidence of any name change (if applicable)
  1. Preliminary Review: ANZCA will conduct a preliminary review of your application to assess comparability with Australian/New Zealand standards. This includes evaluating your training, qualifications, specialist practice, CPD, and recency of practice.

  2. Interview: If your application passes the preliminary review, you'll be invited for an interview to further assess your comparability. The interview will cover your training, qualifications, specialist practice, CPD, cultural safety, and community awareness.

  3. Clinical Practice Assessment (CPA): Based on your interview outcome, you may be required to complete a period of supervised clinical practice in Australia or New Zealand.

  4. Performance Assessment: You'll need to successfully complete a performance assessment to demonstrate your clinical skills and competency.

  5. Continuing Professional Development (CPD): Actively participate in the ANZCA CPD program to maintain your skills and knowledge.

  6. Effective Management of Anaesthetic Crises (EMAC) Course: Complete an EMAC course to enhance your crisis management skills.

  7. Fellowship Application: Once you've successfully met all the requirements, you can apply for Fellowship of ANZCA.

  8. Specialist Registration: After obtaining Fellowship, you can apply for specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia (MBA) or the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).

Additional Information:

  • Area of Need Pathway: In Australia, there's also an Area of Need (AoN) pathway that allows IMGs to work in designated areas with workforce shortages before completing the full SIMG pathway.
  • Recency of Practice: If you haven't practiced anaesthesia recently, you may need to complete a return-to-practice program.
  • Fees: Various fees apply throughout the SIMG pathway, including application, interview, and assessment fees.
  • Support: ANZCA provides assistance and guidance to SIMGs throughout the process.

ο»Ώ Locum doctors and nurses across Emergency, Psychiatry, Surgery, ICU, General Practice, and Medical specialties give a lot. Long shifts in Emergency. Emotionally demanding work in mental health. High-pressure theatres and ICUs. Busy GP clinics. RMOs rotating through unfamiliar teams and hospitals. Add shift work, nights, weekends, and constant change, and it becomes clear why wellbeing matters so deeply for healthcare workers , especially those working locum or rotating contracts. At Blugibbon, we believe supporting doctors and nurses means more than filling rosters. It means creating community, balance, and continuity , particularly for those working across Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. That is why we are opening up a free monthly wellbeing session for doctors and nurses , regardless of specialty or contract type.

If you’re a doctor looking for short-term, high-paying work outside the hospital system, offshore medicine in Australia is one of the most exclusive and rewarding options available. These roles support oil and gas operations, drilling vessels, and remote energy sites, and they’re not for everyone. Offshore operators want doctors who are fully credentialed, calm under pressure, and ready to deploy. That’s why most offshore doctor jobs are never advertised publicly... and why specialist agencies like Blugibbon exist. ο»Ώ

ο»Ώ For experienced GP Emergency doctors and rural locums, Norfolk Island is one of the most remote and unusual medical placements available in Australia. This is not a typical locum role. It is a high responsibility environment that requires confidence, resilience, and a realistic understanding of what isolated medicine involves. At Blugibbon, we believe doctors deserve clear, accurate information before committing to remote or offshore locum work. The aim is always to match the right doctor to the right environment. What follows is a grounded overview of GP Emergency work on Norfolk Island, based on firsthand experience during a particularly busy Christmas and New Year period.
