Your Pathway to Becoming a Psychiatrist in Australia: A Guide for International Medical Graduates

Are you a qualified psychiatrist looking to relocate to Australia and continue your career in mental health?

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) offers several pathways for international medical graduates (IMGs) to gain recognition of their qualifications and practice in Australia.

Why Choose the RANZCP?

The RANZCP is the principal organisation representing psychiatrists in Australia and New Zealand. It's dedicated to:

  • High-Quality Training: The RANZCP offers rigorous training programs that ensure psychiatrists meet the highest standards of clinical practice.
  • Mental Health Advocacy: The College actively advocates for improved mental health services and promotes mental well-being across diverse communities.
  • Research and Innovation: The RANZCP fosters research and innovation in mental health, contributing to advancements in the field.

Pathways to Fellowship of the RANZCP (FRANZCP)

For international specialist psychiatrists, there are three main pathways to attaining Fellowship of the RANZCP:

1. Substantial Comparability Pathway

  • Assessment: Begin by undergoing the RANZCP specialist assessment process. If your qualifications and experience are deemed substantially comparable to Australian standards, you'll be eligible for this pathway.
  • Supervised Placement: This pathway involves a 12-month supervised work placement where you'll gain practical experience in the Australian healthcare system and complete workplace-based assessments to demonstrate your competency.

2. Partial Comparability Pathway

  • Assessment: If your specialist assessment shows partial comparability, you'll be invited to complete this pathway.
  • Modified Training: This pathway is a tailored version of the RANZCP Fellowship Program, designed to address any gaps in your skills or experience. It involves at least two years of supervised training, including rotations in various psychiatric subspecialties, exams to assess your knowledge, and workplace-based assessments to evaluate your clinical skills.

3. Fellowship Program

  • Direct Entry: If you're not eligible for specialist assessment or your assessment is not comparable, you can apply directly to the RANZCP Fellowship Program. This is a comprehensive training program consisting of three stages:
  • Stage 1 (Basic Level): 12 months of core training in adult psychiatry, providing a foundation in clinical practice and psychiatric principles.
  • Stage 2 (Advanced Level): Further training in specialised areas of psychiatry, such as child and adolescent psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, or addiction psychiatry.
  • Stage 3 (Advanced Training): Focuses on developing advanced skills in your chosen area of specialisation and preparing for independent practice.

Entry Requirements for the Fellowship Program:

  • Medical Degree: You must have a recognised medical degree.
  • General Medical Training: Two years of full-time equivalent general medical training is required for applicants commencing in 2025 onwards.
  • Medical Registration: You must hold current general registration as a medical practitioner in Australia or New Zealand.

Application Process for the Fellowship Program:

  • Submit Application: Complete the application form and pay the required fees. more info here
  • Document Training: Ensure all training requirements are complete and documented.
  • Provide Registration: Provide evidence of current medical registration.
  • Obtain Support: Have your application proposed and seconded by two RANZCP Fellows.
  • Complete Requirements: Complete all necessary rotations, assessments, and examinations as outlined in the Fellowship Program curriculum.
  • Pay Fees: Pay the Fellowship application fee and initial subscription fee.

Upon successful completion of all requirements and approval by the RANZCP Board, you will be admitted to Fellowship and can use the FRANZCP post-nominal.

ο»Ώ Locum doctors and nurses across Emergency, Psychiatry, Surgery, ICU, General Practice, and Medical specialties give a lot. Long shifts in Emergency. Emotionally demanding work in mental health. High-pressure theatres and ICUs. Busy GP clinics. RMOs rotating through unfamiliar teams and hospitals. Add shift work, nights, weekends, and constant change, and it becomes clear why wellbeing matters so deeply for healthcare workers , especially those working locum or rotating contracts. At Blugibbon, we believe supporting doctors and nurses means more than filling rosters. It means creating community, balance, and continuity , particularly for those working across Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. That is why we are opening up a free monthly wellbeing session for doctors and nurses , regardless of specialty or contract type.

If you’re a doctor looking for short-term, high-paying work outside the hospital system, offshore medicine in Australia is one of the most exclusive and rewarding options available. These roles support oil and gas operations, drilling vessels, and remote energy sites, and they’re not for everyone. Offshore operators want doctors who are fully credentialed, calm under pressure, and ready to deploy. That’s why most offshore doctor jobs are never advertised publicly... and why specialist agencies like Blugibbon exist. ο»Ώ

ο»Ώ For experienced GP Emergency doctors and rural locums, Norfolk Island is one of the most remote and unusual medical placements available in Australia. This is not a typical locum role. It is a high responsibility environment that requires confidence, resilience, and a realistic understanding of what isolated medicine involves. At Blugibbon, we believe doctors deserve clear, accurate information before committing to remote or offshore locum work. The aim is always to match the right doctor to the right environment. What follows is a grounded overview of GP Emergency work on Norfolk Island, based on firsthand experience during a particularly busy Christmas and New Year period.
