INDIGENOUS HEALTH ORGANISATIONS FOR GPS

For almost a decade Blugibbon has specialised in providing Locum GPs to Indigenous Health Services and Aboriginal Medical Services.

The GPs that return time and time again to the same or similar services do so because the health of Indigenous Australia is a true passion. And some have a very personal reason to do so as they are Indigenous themselves.
Over the course of providing locum jobs to these GPs, we have noted there are some valuable organisations, that healthcare professionals should join if they too share this passion for Indigenous Health.

Here are our top 3 suggestions for Locum GPs interested in Indigenous Health Services and Aboriginal Medical Services.

AUSTRALIAN INDIGENOUS DOCTORS’ ASSOCIATION ( AIDA )

Way back in 1997 a number of Indigenous medical doctors and medical students gathered at a conference in Salamander Bay on New South Wales’ mid-north coast.
Just a year later the Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association (AIDA) was officially born.   With its headquarters in Canberra AIDA its purpose is to, “…contribute to equitable health and life outcomes and the cultural wellbeing of Indigenous people. We do this by working towards reaching population parity of Indigenous medical students and doctors. And supporting a culturally safe healthcare system”.
In 2021 AIDA will be embarking on a national roadshow for members, taking in six different locations across Australia.

INDIGENOUS GENERAL PRACTICE REGISTRAR’S NETWORK ( IGPRN )

Founded in 2008, the IGPRN gives Indigenous GP Registrars a community and platform, as they proudly state. “…it is essential that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders play a critical role in the Australian health system”.
With two national workshops running each year, the service also provides the chance to connect members with mentors. In the form of Indigenous FRACGPs or FACRRMs.

RACGP ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER HEALTH

With a number of faculties catering for the many subsets of General Practice in Australia, The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) also has an active one named National Faculty of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health.
In 2010 the creation of this group was based on the aim of, “…raising GP awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health needs and their cultural context, and to advocating for culturally appropriate health delivery systems, which improve health outcomes”.
Membership is open to all GPs with an interest in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and currently has an impressive 10,000 members.
